 More Than 300 Windham Area Residents Step Out For A Single Cause
 

WINDHAM, Conn. More than 300 Windham area residents laced up and stepped out Sunday, April 13, to take part in the 2008 Travelers Walk MS which was held at University of Connecticut, Storrs Campus. Under partly sunny skies and seasonable temperatures, area residents came out in force to raise more than $25,000, already $2,000 more than that raised at the site last year. 

“We are delighted with the incredible turnout,” said Michelle Zimnoch, who is coordinating the walk event. “The visible support and passion of those attending buoy and encourage those affected by multiple sclerosis. Meaningful change takes place when individuals from all walks of life step out together in support of a single cause to end the devastating effects of multiple sclerosis.”

University of Connecticut students Karrie Lundgren, Manchester,Conn., and Holly Price, Hamden, Conn., along with their brothers and sisters of Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma helped coordinate the April 13 Travelers Walk MS on the UConn campus.

Participants walked 2.5- or 5-mile routes, returning to finish line festivities, which included lunch compliments of Subway and Coca-Cola.

 “If folks in Windham were unable to participate April 13, there’s still an opportunity to get involved,” said Zimnoch. “The event will take place again at 11 other sites across the state, including Manchester and Woodstock, Sunday, May 4.”

Funds raised through National MS Society, Connecticut Chapter events, such as the Travelers Walk MS, ensure ongoing scientific research to find better therapies, treatments and a cure. Funds also provide for the continuation of vital programs and services offered by the chapter to those in the state affected by multiple sclerosis.

 The University of Connecticut walk site planning committee hopes to raise $34,000. The prize deadline for submitting outstanding individual and team pledges is June 2. The Connecticut Chapter, which now hosts walks at 12 site locations, hopes to raise $1.5 million. Last year, the MS Walk raised approximately $1.1 million with the UConn site contributing $23,000.
